A program of intensive summer courses is about to be launched in the summer 2016 in the town of Kavala in northern Greece, organized by Unbound Prometheus, a New York based academic company, in collaboration with the Technological and Educational Institute (TEI) of Kavala which is part of the national educational system of Greece. The program is unique among comparable programs in Europe because, unlike the vast majority of them, it offers the highest quality on the academic side but also in terms of accommodations and planned activities. The first cycle of the program consists of two courses: Economics with Experiments, taught by Prof. Miltos Makris, University of Southampton, UK. Prof. Makris will be teaching his very popular course using in‐class experiments to illustrate basic economic principles. A Scientist’s Book of Genesis taught by Prof. Michael Rampino, New York University. Rampino is an award‐winning professor of Biology and Environmental Studies who has also taught at Columbia University and Dartmouth College and is affiliated with NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies. This is a course on cosmic evolution which examines the history of the intimate relationship between the Earth’s changing environments and the evolution of life. The quality of the program is equally impressive in terms of its non‐academic aspects. The students will be staying in a 5‐star hotel in Kavala and they will be offered two meals a day (breakfast and dinner). There are several planned excursions and events, the highlight of which is a one‐day boat trip to the island of Thassos, near Kavala. The cost of the program is perhaps the most appealing feature of it. The cost of the entire package (tuition, room and board, activities, etc) is about $2,600. To get a sense of comparison, a student taking one of these courses in a top US university would pay, just for tuition, nearly $4,000, with room and board, and excursions costing extra. The program is ideal for undergraduate students who can transfer the three credits offered by each course to their own universities. It is also very useful for students in the last two grades of high school who intend to apply to universities, especially those interested in western universities, because taking such courses looks good in college applications. Moreover, students who achieve high grades will be entitled to reference letters by their professors. All courses are taught in English. Please note that the deadline for registration is March 1st though an extension may be possible.
